Horned God Tattoo Symbolism

Horned God Tattoo Symbolism

Cernunnos is the ancient Celtic god who is also known as the ”horned god” or “horned one.”

I’ve seen two Cernunnos tattoos, and they totally rocked my socks.  After talking with the owners of these tattoos and combining my own knowledge/observations about this deity, I’ve decided to share a few thoughts about possible meanings of the horned god tattoo with you.

Cernunnos (horned god) tattoo meanings at-a-glance:

  • Fertility
  • Virility
  • Strength
  • Honor
  • Courage
  • Connection
  • Community
  • Shamanism
  • Cycles of Time
  • Stability
  • Balancing Duality
  • Sexual Power
  • Male Power
  • Female Power
  • Unity with Nature

The horned god is (obviously) set apart from the rest of Celtic deities because of his spectacular antlers perched atop his head.  Cernunnos’ totem animal is the stag, and where the beast is not depicted in ancient artwork, the horns on Cernunnos’ head mark the shamanistic connection with the stag.  Both antler and animal are symbolic of male assertion, dominance, thrust, sexual superiority and action.  Antlers are visible symbols of authority in the wild – and the bigger the rack – the more powerful the owner.  It has to do with survival of the fittest.  Only the largest and strongest rack of horns can insure a stag will lay with his mate and thus propel his lineage.  Same holds true with the horned god.  In this way, the horned god tattoo might be a the ticket if you are looking for artistic ways to express your confidence and full capability to provide for your community.

Cernunnos is nota statement of male dominance.  Far from it.  His horns are also a feminine quality when they are rendered as a crescent atop his head (instead of antlers).  The crescent horns are symbolic of the crescent moon – which hearkens to feminine power.  Also, the torc  (a gold or copper piece of jewelry commonly worn amongst Celts) is symbolic of feminine energy.  That the horned god wears the torc is a statement about balance and thoughtful union between male and female dualities.  This balance is inherent in Nature, and Cernunnos is a major spokesgod for this kind of natural synchronicity.  If you honor the energy of male as much as female (and vice versa), a Cernunnos tattoo will reinforce that stance.

The horned god is often depicted with a snake too (sometimes even a horned snake).  This is symbolic of sensory perception.  Snakes experience their world in uncommon ways.  Through tongue and skin their primary data-gathering is accomplished.  This is symbolic of sensual knowing – tactile understanding.  Snakes are also symbolic of transition and transformation.  It has to do with the shedding of their skin.  If these aspects of the horned god tattoo really sing to you, then make sure to include Cernunnos’ totem snake in your design.

This is just a small portion of the potential tattoo symbolism behind the horned god.

Stag Tattoo Symbolism

Stag tattoo meaning
(at-a-glance):

  • Heroism
  • Confidence
  • Pride
  • Nobility
  • Strength
  • Virility
  • Cycles
  • Provision
  • Protection

The stag is a symbol of strength in countless cultures, legends and myth throughout history and across the globe.  Why?  Gee, just take a look at one – in the wilderness or even in a National Geographic mag – these beasts are stunning to behold.

Most notably, their antlers are symbolic of their dominance within the ranks of Nature.  The bigger the rack – the more virile they are considered (by both doe and in human archetypal understanding).  In their environment – antlers are tools and weapons.  In a battle of territory and sexual conquest, size does matter and a massive antler-arrangement goes a long way to insure proper respect.  Same holds true with a stag tattoo sporting an awesome fan of antlers.  They’re symbolic of age (wisdom), elitism and superiority.

Antlers are also considered a solar feature by many Native perspectives.  It’s because antlers resemble expanding rays of the sun.  If we add solar symbolism to stag antlers, we get a symbolic mix of: Vitality, Energy, Radiance and Right-Action.

A stag tattoo meaning can also point to the recycling nature of all life.  Here again, it’s their antlers that point to this aspect.  Stags grow antlers in the Spring (symbolic of birth, renewal, the return of life), and fall off in the Fall (symbolic of death, introspection and hibernation).  Are you keen about your own personal cycles of being?  Do you profoundly feel the rise and fall of Nature and Time?  The Stag might help you express these stirrings in a bold way.

Of course, if you’re a hunter, a Stag tattoo might be common sense.  Let’s hope you’re in touch with the ancient history behind hunting, and the fact of interconnectivity of all life.  Maybe a Stag tattoo can galvanize the concept of becoming one: The hunter and the hunted sharing an infinite bond – a shamanistic sharing of souls.

Celtic symbolism hold the Stag in high regard.  A symbol of masculine fortitude and an icon of virile power.   In their myths, a white Stag was considered a message of divine importance.  Tons of heros of Celtic legend were lead to (enlightenment?) victory by a white stag.

Vision, vision, vision.  That’s what a falcon tattoo meaning says to me.  What kind of vision?   A passionate one.  An empirial aim for a higher ideal.

Why do I feel that?  Because the falcon is a noble bird whose acumen for reaching greater heights  is legendary.

The Egyptians knew it.  That’s why the falcon is a noble companion and consort of their sun god, Ra.  With its association with solar power, Ra (and the falcon) were tantamount to superior vision.  They weren’t just one step removed from god – they were god.  We’re talking divine embodiment here – tapping into raw, primal heat.  Egyptians were savvy about the ways of the falcon, sure – but they were more aware of the spirit of the falcon which seemed to circle the sun with ferocious determination and ceaseless courage.

That’s what I’m talking about when that concept of “vision” keeps flying through my observations about the falcon.  Falcon tattoos encourage us to scale the heavens of our own potential, fly fearlessly into the fire of the sun, and keep reaching higher – reaching for more – keep rising to hit the target of personal vision.

We get the sense of this in ancient Europe too where the falcon is a symbol of obtaining the “prize.”  The sport of falconry – training a raptor in the art of the hunt is highly honorable (when executed in the authentic tradition).  Training a falcon takes time, devotion, commitment – it requires focus on the skills and talents inherent in the bird too.

True, the falcon does what it does naturally:  Hone in on the prey, and master the capture.  However, it takes the vision and focus of the falconer to refine these primal impulses in a falcon.  It also takes cooperation.  That’s one of the reasons falconry is relegated to royalty – because it recognizes respect and honor between man and beast.

That spirit of collaboration between human and raptor is key in a falcon tattoo.  It talks about communion with a divine essence with a bird of indomitable courage and ceaseless gumption.

Furthermore, if you’re thinking of getting a falcon tattoo, know that it’s more than a statement of power.  Know that you’re invoking the fine-bright, blinding power of the sun within that tattoo.  Know that the falcon can aid in your journey of commitment to your highest vision.  Know that in your flights of higher ideals, the falcon is a companion in your vision.  A true, revolutionary ally on your path to clarified focus.

These are just a few (rather passionate) thoughts about the falcon tattoo meanings.

Do as the falcon does, and climb to ever higher reaches in your understanding by taking a look at a few other pages I’ve written about falcon symbolism:

Most of the dog tattoos I see are memorial tattoos – permanent displays of personal love and affection for a canine companion who has passed into the great dog lands of the heavens.

Interestingly, dogs themselves are considered sentinels to the gateways of the Otherworlds.  In ancient Egyptian, Celtic, Greco-Roman and other myths, the dog represents a kind of “psychopomp” or spiritual guide – an ally while a human soul is transferring between the realms of physical and non-physical.  Do you feel you are straddling the dimensions of worldly life and ephemeral reality?  Perhaps a dog tattoo can solidify a feeling of guardianship and protection as you move through the veils of reality and experience.

In Shamanic wisdom (as well as Celtic thought), the dog is associated with the powers of the forest.  Here we see canines as keen, savvy wilderness guides.  Hearty, strong and stead-fast to leading us through dark and infinitely mystical territory, the dog is a champion guide.  Dogs are phenomenal companions on any kind of journey (spiritual, physical, emotional).  A dog tattoo might be a great way to convey that concept of guidance as you wind your way through dark forests of life.

In Asian symbolism, the dog is incredibly good luck.  The Chinese prescribe symbolism of prosperity, good fortune, obedience and friendliness to the dog.  The dog is also associated with Aquarius in the Chinese zodiac, and therefore is considered to have an amicable disposition.  Philanthropic, empathic and very well-liked are other attributes.  If you need a bit of luck or a boost in your social standing, a dog tattoo might be the reminder you need for these aspects.

Dogs are associated with both lunar  and solar qualities.

As a moon-connected creature, the dog reminds us to move in-sync with the shadows in our midst.  Moon dogs also ask us to release ourselves to our untamed selves.  Howl at the moon.  Copulate by moonlight. Go mad with lunar lust.  Dogs do it, so can your soul.  A moon-dog tattoo might underscore a need to break out of conformity.

Solar dogs will remind us of our vitality, strength and courage.  Dogs associated with the sun are also symbolic of bright self-expression and clear communication.  Countless cultures have recruited dogs in the aid of agriculture (a sun-affiliated field), as well as war/battle (also associated with the heat of the sun).  If you’re looking to bolster bravado and/or you’re aiming for illuminated self-expression, a sun-dog tattoo might be your sign.

The color of your dog tattoo is a tale-teller too.  White dogs are symbolic of purification, clarity, virtue and stamina.  Black dogs have a lunar flavor to them and hearken back to the baying hounds of Hecate who is the mistress of shadows.  Red dogs convey virility and a sense of victory in personal battles.

Dogs are also considered animal healers.  They are associated with sacred waters in Celtic mythology (which offer healing/cleansing power).  Canines are also depicted with Asclepius, an ancient Greek physician of renown portent.  In many cultures, dogs were thought to have immense healing powers.  Ancients observed dogs tending to their own wounds (licking) with remarkable healing results.  Are you a healer? Shamanic wisdom encourages you to invite the dog in your healing practices, as this creature will guide you in more effective healing results.  A dog tattoo may also serve as a dynamic statement of your power and desire to heal others (and/or yourself).

This is just a small sampling of dog symbolism for tattoos.  If you dig it, check out my more in-depth page on Dog Meaning and Symbolism here.

  • Waiting

  • Transition
  • Time
  • Temperance
  • Cosmos
  • Cycles
  • Balance
  • Inevitability
  • Mortality

I have a 3 friends with hourglass tattoos.

Steve is serving life in prison – no parole.  His hourglass tattoo signifies the inevitability of his situation.  In his case, the tattoo is a stern marker of the unchangeable truth of his future.  There is only time.  This is his harsh reality: His scenery will not change until his death.

If life finds you waiting, waiting, waiting for the next phase, an hourglass tattoo might be a good reminder that this too shall pass – change is inevitable – and one way or another – the scenery is going to change.

Another buddy of mine, Grayson, got an hourglass tattoo for much brighter reasons.  To him, an hourglass is symbolic of the balance seen in the Universe.  In script font, he had this tattooed around the timepiece:

To see a world in a grain of sand,
And a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
And eternity in an hour
.”

Of course, this passage is from the legendary poem Auguries of Innocence by William Blake.

This is a great conveyance.  Ancient alchemists had similar ideas about the symbolic meaning of the hourglass.   They pictured one half of the glass as symbolic of the sky.  The lower half representing the earth.  Energy passes between the two and expresses a pervasive feel of balance, duality, and the infinite cycles of life passing between experiences of mundane and ethereal.

Are you awestruck by the wonder and inevitability inherent in the cycles of life and the cosmos?  Are you needing to memorialize your knowledge that all life prevails (one way or another) with the passing of time?  If so, an hourglass tattoo might be your thing.

Most of us are familiar with the saying “she has an hourglass figure.”  The hourglass has a curvaceous appeal, very feminine.

My friend Sable picked up on this sensual look with her ink.  Her hourglass tattoo represents the Divine Feminine and how power can be derived through specifically female cycles of life.  She understands female rites.  From maiden, mother to crone and beyond – her hourglass tattoo captures all the elements of feminine progress.  Her piece galvanizes her understanding of what it means to be a fully developed woman.  Fascinating, really.

Speaking of gender, another view at the hourglass can reveal two triangles: One erect and one inverted, each meeting tip-to-tip.  This is a common motif of male (erect) and female (inverted).  An hourglass tattoo might be a unique way to convey the timeless connection between male/female.  Or, perhaps even a way to express the endless dance between polarity  (yin/yang, light/dark, creation/destruction, moon/sun, etc).

Whether you are wanting an expression of “tempus fugit” (time flies) or looking for an unorthodox expression of the phases of life-at-large…I hope these observations help you in your tattoo research.

  • Threefold/Trinity
  • Sacred
  • Divine Expression
  • Indestructible word (truth)
  • Creation
  • Evolution
  • Manifestation

It’s amazing how a whole procession of meanings can tumble out of one little symbol.  The om symbol (a.k.a.: ohm, aum, omkar) is one such symbol – proof that BIG symbolism often comes in tiny packages.

Getting an om tattoo will convey an understanding of very primitive, ancient universal principles.  This symbol is actually a conveyance of sound – the sound of life.  Emitting the aaaaaauuuuuummmm sound from the vocal chords, is mimicking the harmonic tone of all creation.

There are theories that the core of existence vibrates at a set-point.  From an abyss of nothingness there is uttered a divine call.  It is as if the cosmic mouth opens and presses out a sweet song of creation across the void.

So, we can see how this one symbol packs a lot of power.  The song of creation is nestled in the sound of “om”  actually, there are three sacred vocalizations “ah” “uh” and “hmmm” – each slight nuance is made through the movement of the mouth & the focus of high intent.

This three-part verbal expression of the om is symbolic of so much. The advent and culmination of triangular principles like:

  • dawn, afternoon, dusk
  • creation, sustaining, destruction
  • conscious, unconscious, subconscious

Vastly powerful concepts all rolling around in verbal expression, tied to this sacred symbol.  The om is expressed most commonly in Buddhism, Jainism and Hinduism.

To be sure, the om tattoo symbolism conveys a reverence for life, an honor for creation and an understanding of the divine motion of the Universe.

Getting an omkar tattoo will galvanize these really heady concepts.  Permanent, ritualistic ink of this symbol is an appropriate conveyance of sacred awareness – timeless awareness – affinity for unifying forces scintillating within the core of natural progression.

Am I being over-dramatic about this om tattoo symbolism?  Maybe.  But to me, this symbol (and every symbol we boldly brand upon our bodies) is a very, very big deal.

If we are going to ink it, we had better have an understanding as permanent and deep as our ink is.

Don’t stop here with your research.  Keep exploring this magnificent Check out the Wiki on om symbolism here.  I think you’ll like what you read there.

  • Patience
  • Silence
  • Honor

In order to familiarize ourselves with the power and purpose that backs up panther tattoos, it behooves us to observe a bit about the panther in the wild.

In their natural habitat, panthers are stalkers.  They track movements of their prey, stealthily prowl and ambush the object of their hunt from a blind-side.  This is symbolic of strategy.  The panther contemplates its most advantageous tactic.  Are you a calculating individual?  Do you sit back and observe your surroundings before you act?  Do you take in the details, and then pounce on opportunities when the timing is right?  If this sounds like you, then the panther may be the perfect totem tattoo for you.

Not only do these magnificent creatures symbolize intelligence and tact, they also represent deep aspects of magic.  This is largely due to their native habitat.  The panther dwells within the deepest regions of the darkest jungles.  In ancient cultures the panthers home is within the richest wombs of the earth – where moist emerald jungles teem with life, breathe with diversity and glisten with rich vitality.

It is here the panther claims its kingdom and silently roams its dense and exotic realms.  There is much that remains unknown within the folds of the jungle – and the unknown is the gateway to magic.  It makes sense the panther is the keeper of this dark, sacred magic.  Do the realms of shadow, and the lands of exotic unknowns excite you?  The panther tattoo is a fitting memorial for this kind of fascination.

The sense of magic and the idea of the panther as a sacred “secret keeper” is enhanced by it’s obsidian hues.  Black panthers are symbolic of the night – where secrets are kept tightly locked away from the light of the sun.  Black is a color of mystery and silence and deep secrets.  Black is also a very lunar energy and can be associated with the Divine Feminine.

Interestingly, the panther is a solitary creature, preferring its own company over anyone else’s.  Outside of a mother raising her cubs, panthers live, hunt and evolve alone. This is symbolic of the Hermit - an ancient archetype of one who contemplates and evolves in unique understandings due to living a solitary life.  Living in this manner causes unorthodox insights, and brings one closer to understanding various precious secrets of life because there are no distractions

Just something to consider as you embark upon your exploration of getting a panther tattoo.  If you tend to enjoy solitude, contemplating the deeper mysteries in life, the panther may be calling to you.

The panther is also considered a symbol of protection, and many South American myths identify the panther as the guardian of spirit worlds.  In the wild, panthers hunt during dusk and dawn – these are considered to be powerful moments in time among ancient cultures.  Dusk and dawn are moments of transition and magical metamorphosis – moments of infinite potential.

This, combined with it’s sleek black coat, piercing eyes and consummate hunting skills makes the panther a legendary guardian of other realms, and spiritual worlds.  Are you the protector of your own special worlds?  Are you the guardian of your clan or tribe?  Perhaps a panther tattoo is the right emblem to convey your powerful ability to guard that which is precious to you.

On the prowl for more information? I don’t blame you, I’m always prowling around for more too.  Take a look at my Panther Symbolism page for more intriguing symbolic tidbits.

I see rose tattoos a lot. It’s no mystery why.  The rose is an incredibly powerful image whose symbolism transcends in elegant ways.

Interestingly, many people with rose tattoos adore their personal blossoms, but are unaware of some of its ancient mysteries.  Let’s take a moment to smell the sweet scent of rose symbolism through the various perspectives:

Roman – Honor the Fallen:   In the height of their time, roses and rose petals were strewn across the bodies and/or grave sites of soldiers.  Red roses were used to symbolize blood shed for the Roman Empire.  Red is associated with Mars, the god of war.  It’s also associated with Venus, goddess of love.  The intoxicating scent of roses lifted through the air, and carried the spirits of fallen heroes  into the loving arms of Venus with Mars looking on with fierce pride.  There are themes of resurrection here, which can be incorporated into your own ideas of rose tattoo meaning.

Greek – Erotic Creative Vision:  The rose is associated with heavy-hitters in Greek myth like Aphrodite (lovely love goddess), Hecate (the insanely powerful dominatrix of the intangibles), Dionysus (that affectionate hedonistic party animal).  We see themes of eroticism, mystery and sensuality in these Greek gods who partake of the velvet realms of the rose.  I’m particularly intrigued by the rose’s association  with the classic Greek Muses, especially Erato who was a heart-stopping beauty.  She was gifted with spectacular creativity too.  Roses are symbolic of her ability to pierce the heart of man with her intoxicating song and beauty.  And so, your rose tattoo can woo the creative, sensual muse and goddess from within.

Rosicrucian/Alchemical - Unfolding Progress:  The Rosicrucian’s, an elite fleet of visionaries formed under the fatherly tutelage of Dr. Christian Rosenkreuz held the rose at the center of their symbolic focal point.  The rose is featured as a symbol of spiritual progress – an unfolding or blossoming to ever grander heights in human evolution.  Traditional rosy crosses are multi-layered.  The center section of the rose is symbolic of unity and reminds the observer that god is the glue of all life.  Other layers will point to initiation and progress along the pilgrimage to enlightenment.  So, if you are experience a resurgence of the soul – a rose tattoo meaning may convey a sense of transformation, blossoming and unfolding beautifully to share new depths of yourself with the world.

Christian – Unblemished Bliss:  The rose often adorns the beloved Mary in Christian art as a symbol of purity, innocence, beauty, sacrifice and perfection.  From fragrance to visage – the rose is a fitting brand for the blessed Mary.  The “Rose of Sharon” is symbolic of the Church.  Colors also play a part in rose meanings in Christian thought.  White roses are symbolic of purification.  Red roses serve as a memorial to the blood of the slain Christ.  If you have aims to express your faith in deeply symbolic ways, then a rose tattoo may be for you.

This is a little trip around the world in terms of seeking rose tattoo meaning.

Getting a Thunderbird tattoo will incorporate an intense Native American symbol into your awareness that is both extremely powerful and protective.

Depending upon which tribe you consult the Thunderbird serves as a mammoth warrior spirit.  You know when war is afoot because blinding beams of lightning shoot from the Thunderbirds eyes, and deafening cracks of thunder are heard in the skies from the flapping of Thunderbird wings.  In this light, Thunderbird tattoo symbolism heats the blood and prepares the wearer of the tattoo for battle.

Thunderbirds are also extremely protective of warriors and peace-makers alike.  In fact, the Thunderbird gives strength and protection to fierce warriors who call upon the spirit bird.  The bird also favors peace keepers and when a wise elder in a tribe is ready to pass into the spirit realms, the Thunderbird is said to swoop down and carry away the soul of the tribal member so that he/she can live with the Thunderbird spirit lands in a place of honor.

Plains tribes describe four special kinds of Thunderbirds; one for each of the four corners of the Universe.  When getting your Thunderbird tattoo, you may want to think about each of these and their symbolic meanings:

  • The Golden Thunderbird of the East
Symbolic of new beginnings and where creation stirs at the cusp of dawn. With the rising sun, a dawning of something greater overwhelms us.  As the warmth of a new day presses upon us, our own divine spark ignites and we are newly aware of far more potential in life than ever before. In this spiritually-focused quadrant, the Golden Thunderbird eyes shine vibrantly upon us and scintillate our souls with creative wisdom.  This divine Thunderbird represents: Spirit, Creativity, Beginnings, Clarity, Illumination
  • The Black Thunderbird of the West
Symbolic of conclusions because this Thunderbird traces the path of the setting sun.  With this earthy, grounded vision we contemplate the material, and the bounty borne from the mouth of matter. In this physically-focused quadrant, the Thunderbird reminds us of our roots, our tribe, and our foundations.  The Black Thunderbird is symbolic of: Transition, Maturity, Materialism, Home, Hunting and Working with our Hands to achieve our needs.
  • The White Thunderbird of the North
Symbolic of the high peaked mountains and the heavens, this Thunderbird reminds us of our ability to think and strategize for a better way of life. This Thunderbird brings us wisdom, science and knowledge accumulated through natural life cycles.  This knowledge is purified atop the tips of sky-clad, ice-capped mountains of wisdom. After purification, this wisdom trickles to our awareness and we prepare for Intellectual illumination. In this mentally-focused quadrant, the greatest reaches of our comprehension roll back into us, causing avalanches of deductive reason. The White Thunderbird is symbolic of: Intellect, Cunning, Reasoning, Telepathy, Understanding, Perception and Strategy
  • The Red Thunderbird of the South
A symbol of ancient bloodlines we share with all Native people in the vastness of humankind.  This Thunderbird flies through ancestral lineage and reveals our history in waves of pride-filled emotion.  The heart of this Thunderbird beats within us too because we are reminded of the collective heart beat – the rhythmic lub-dub we all share.  This Thunderbird represents the sacred bond of blood brothers and sisters within the cosmic clan of humankind.  The Red Thunderbird teaches us about relationships, family connections, community and partnerships.  Consequently, this Thunderbird is symbolic of: Love, Connection, Empathy, Compassion, Honor, Respect, Family, Bloodlines, and how we relate to our global community.

Elephant tattoos, overwhelmingly seem to denote strength.  It’s no wonder – the animal is mammoth in size.  Weighing at over four tons and hitting over 10 feet tall, the elephant is a behemoth symbol conveying incredible power.

In spite of its girth, wildlife experts will tell you the elephant’s temper (unless provoked) is pretty low-key.  This is where many people derive special symbolism.  People who gravitate to elephant tattoos are often extremely powerful and can easily dominate – yet they prefer to keep peace and keep things calm.  Gentle Giants they could be described – just like elephants.

Elephants are extremely protective of their young and members of their herd.  This offers symbolism to people getting tattoos who place the value of their families above everything else.  Elephants will die to protect their family.  If you share the same fiercely protective instinct for your family, an elephant tattoo might be fitting for you.

The elephant is sacred to Buddha.  Legend indicates before Mahaprajapati Gautami’s incarnation as the Buddha, he developed in the womb in the form of a white elephant.  The white elephant is a pristine symbol of Buddhism to this day.  When associated with the Buddha, the meaning of an elephant tattoo conveys compassion, truth, peace, love and kindness.

Ganesha, a well-known Hindu deitiy has the head of an elephant.  Ganesha is thought to bring luck, and move obstacles out of the way for the pure of heart and intent.  A Ganesha tattoo often commemorates the god, and serves as a reminder that all hindrances are removed in faith and purity of intent.  Ganesha, is also a patron deity of art, science and as his elephant qualities imply, he is considered a god of great wisdom and discernment.

In regions of Tibet the elephant is associated with creation.  More specifically, ancient text depict an elephant holding up entire universe.  When the elephant is seen in ancient architecture holding up vast structures, carved in pillars and foundational stonework, this is symbolic of the stabilizing presence of the elephant and the legend of the elephant bearing the weight of the world – keeping the world on in place.  We also see this stabilizing symbolism of the elephant in India. People who “feel the weight of the world on their shoulders” may gravitate to elephant tattoos, and may be attracted to the elephant as a totem and as a giver of strength.

Aristotle claimed the elephant abstained from sex while his mate was pregnant – a whole two years.  This lead to symbolism of chastity, patience, consideration and exhibiting thoughtful devotion in a relationship. This also carries meanings of prudence and moderation, which may appeal to some looking to commemorate these themes by getting an elephant tattoo.

Pliny, a Roman philosopher of the natural world had dealings with elephants while he served in the Roman Empire Army.  He said the elephant was every bit a sacred animal and symbolized renewal.  Pliny wrote that when elephants bathed in the rivers at night, this was symbolic of of purifying itself in the new moon

Roman perspectives also observed the elephant to be legendary for long lives – so they deemed the creature to be symbolic of immortality, longevity and living in harmony with divinity and nature.

Alchemically, the elephant is attuned with Mercury, and thus shares symbolism of high intellect, communication, commerce and shrewd discernment.
